Red Flags and Other Conditions Causing Back Pain

Certain red flags that cause lower back pain require immediate medical attention. including:

  • Cauda equina syndrome is a serious but rare complication of a ruptured disc or spinal stenosis. It occurs when there is severe narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of the bundle of lumbar nerves, causing loss of bladder and bowel control. Permanent neurological damage may happen if this syndrome is left untreated.
  • Infections, infections can cause pain when they involve the vertebrae, as in osteomyelitis which is a bone infection. Diskitis is an infection involving  the intervertebral discs. Theses conditions may require more aggressive treatment such as IV antibiotics and in rare cases surgery.
  • Tumors can also cause of back pain. These may be benign masses like cysts or cancers that spread to the spine. Treatments will vary depending on the type of tumor.
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms occur when the aorta, a large artery that supplies blood to the abdomen and pelvis, balloons out because of a weak wall. Back pain can be a sign that the aneurysm is becoming larger and is threatening to rupture soon.

There are other conditions that do not necessarily have a relation to the spine that can also cause lower back pain include:

  • Endometriosis is the accumulation of uterine tissue in places outside the uterus.
  • Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome associated with muscle pain and fatigue.
  • Kidney stones can cause sharp pain in the lower back, usually in the flank area.
  • Pregnancy can cause back pain in certain cases
  • Heartburn: usually mid back pain related to acid reflux in the esophagus that is located behind the chest wall structures
  • Kidney infections: UTI or pyelonephritis, which are infections of the kidneys
  • Lung problems: pleurisy or inflammation of the lining of the lungs
